In Devon’s seaside resort of Torbay, amongst the sun, sea and sand, Mrs Langfrey Clandon and her three clever but unconventional children have returned to England after 18 years abroad. As coincidence would have it, the father and husband that they left is also in Torbay. While the children are excited about the thought of rekindling their lost relationship, Mrs Clandon fears that her turbulent past has come back to haunt her. Along with the family, a monetarily challenged dentist, an omniscient waiter and an eminent QC add to the frivolity as Shaw explores the battle of the sexes, the absurdities of marriage and the generation gap.

Directed by Sir Peter Hall, You Never Can Tell was seen in Bath this summer, where it met much acclaim.

Edward Fox, who plays the all-knowing waiter, was most recently seen in the West End in The Old Masters alongside Peter Bowles. His other theatre credits include My Fair Lady, Dance Of Death, The Rivals and The Winslow Boy, while memorable films include The Day Of The Jackal, The Go-Between and A Bridge Too Far. Mrs Clandon is played by Diana Quick, whose most recent London performances include After Mrs Rochester and Anna In The Tropics.
