The Red Balloon is a new ballet based on Albert Lamorisse’s film and children’s story of the same title. A boy and a red balloon is a combination to bring about adventure, charm and excitement.

Aletta Collins, whose award-winning choreography has been seen in acclaimed stage productions such as His Dark Materials and Honk!, creates this ROH2 production, which has a new score written by Mieko Shimizu and Peter Morris. Together, the music and the choreography bring alive the joyous evocation of 1950s Parisian childhood that made the award-winning 1956 film the classic it has become.

The Red Balloon follows a young boy who discovers a red balloon that seems to lead him and even befriend him. Everyday life – at home and school – follows unexpected courses with this new red companion, but it is the reactions of others that will finally bring about the tale’s poignant conclusion.

The Red Balloon is suitable for theatregoers aged seven and older.
