Wicked welcomes schools on Halloween

First Published 17 April 2008, Last Updated 18 April 2008

Following the announcement of Wicked Day on 28 October, Wicked the musical continues its Halloween celebrations on the day itself, 31 October, with a special schools-only matinee performance of the show at the Apollo Victoria.

Organised by children’s charity Mousetrap Theatre Projects in honour of its 10th anniversary, the matinee allows 2,200 students aged 12-16 from 50 state secondary schools across London to see Wicked for free. Many of the students will be embracing Halloween by donning fancy dress, and prizes will be given for the wickedest witches and wizards.

Mousetrap Theatre Projects aims to give disadvantaged young people access to theatre across the capital. Over the past decade 50,000 young people have attended the theatre with the help of the charity, which currently runs 14 access, education and audience development programmes. This special schools-only matinee is funded by The London Challenge, a government initiative to broaden young people’s experience of living in London.

Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked imagines the pre-Dorothy lives of the two witches from L Frank Baum’s famous story The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz. Green-faced, misunderstood Elphaba and blonde, popular Galinda meet in college and become unlikely friends, until fate intervenes and they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

While public tickets are not available for the schools-only Halloween performance, all Wicked fans are welcome to the second annual Wicked Day on 28 October, held in Cardinal Place from 11:00-16:00. For more information visit CB
