Wicked birthday for London show

First Published 17 April 2008, Last Updated 18 April 2008

The cast of Wicked celebrates the show’s first birthday in the West End today. The London stage production, which had its first performance at the Apollo Victoria on 7 September last year, plans to see in its second birthday too, having just extended its booking period to 27 September 2008.

Since it opened, over 800,000 people have been to see this stage adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel, which originally opened on Broadway in 2003. Based on the characters from L. Frank Baum’s famous novel The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz and the MGM film, Wicked tells the story of the misunderstood, green-faced Elphaba and the blonde and popular Glinda, who meet at college and become unlikely friends, before fate takes them in different directions.

Wicked currently stars Kerry Ellis as Elphaba, Dianne Pilkington as Glinda and Susie Blake as Madame Morrible, plus original cast members Nigel Planer (the Wizard), James Gillan (Boq) and Katie Rowley Jones (Nessarose). Andy Mace and Oliver Tompsett, both originally in the ensemble cast, stepped up in July to play Doctor Dillamond and Fiyero respectively.
