Suchet’s Earnest to hit cinemas

First Published 17 July 2015, Last Updated 17 July 2015

The West End production of The Importance Of Being Earnest, which stars acclaimed actor David Suchet as Lady Bracknell, is to be screened live to 350 cinemas across the UK and Ireland.

The screening event, which will also feature backstage footage and cast interviews, will take place on 8 October.

Speaking about the news, Suchet said: “I’m delighted that one of the finest plays in the English language will be broadcast live across the UK and Ireland on 8 October, entertaining theatre lovers and Oscar Wilde fans from Inverness to Ilfracombe and almost everywhere in between! We’re having tremendous fun with the play and look forward to sharing this with cinema audiences too.”

Better known for exercising his little grey cells as Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective Hercule Poirot than for donning a Victorian frock, Suchet has nevertheless been entertaining West End audiences as the notoriously proper Lady Bracknell in this latest production of Oscar Wilde’s classic.

The enduring comedy of manners and pretensions follows two bachelor friends, Algernon Moncrieff and John Worthing, who each lead double lives until they fall in love, when their intricate web of lies and deceit becomes too much to handle.

Suchet is joined in The Importance Of Being Earnest, which is booking until 7 November at the Vaudeville Theatre, by Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em’s Michele Dotrice and leading quartet Emily Barber, Michael Benz, Philip Cumbus and Imogen Doel.
