A host of West End stars, including Samuel Barnett, Daniel Evans, Josefina Gabrielle, Ella Smith and Sally Ann Triplett, are to stage a special industry reading of new musical Mathilde later this week.
An invited audience of industry figures will run their eyes over this new piece by Conor Mitchell at the Vaudeville theatre this Friday, 14 November from 13:00.
Mitchell’s new musical, which received a concert staging in Edinburgh earlier this year and is expected to premiere in the West End in 2009, is based on The Necklace, a short story by Guy de Maupassant. Title character Mathilde is a Parisienne beauty who feels trapped in her ordinary life. Her aspirations drive both Mathilde and her husband into a web of intrigue, debt and dalliance with the Paris underworld.
Burgeoning talent Mitchell’s previous works include Merry Christmas Betty Ford and Have A Nice Life, both staged at the Lyric Belfast. Have A Nice Life was also performed at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where it won Best Score.
The staged reading of Mathilde is presented by Surefire Theatrical, the company which produced Make Me A Song at the New Players theatre earlier this year, and Speckulation Entertainment, which is run by the team behind Notes From New York.

Currently playing at the Vaudeville theatre is Piaf, which stars Elena Roger as the enigmatic French performer Edith Piaf. Pam Gems’s biographical piece transferred to the Vaudeville theatre in October following a successful run at the Donmar Warehouse. It is booking until January.
