Stage vs stadium: our alternative guide to Euro 2016

First Published 10 June 2016, Last Updated 10 June 2016

We’ve made a list of the top theatre openings this month, perfect for those avoiding the big game.

If you feel you’ve lost your significant other, best friend or colleagues to football fever then fear not; we have made a list of the best new shows hitting the capital. Perfect to watch with (other) friends or alone, we’ve got enough top talent to see you through to 10 July.

For passionate drama:

The Deep Blue Sea at the Lyttelton, National Theatre – open now

Carrie Cracknell’s production of Rattigan’s classic drama has opened to rave reviews all round (including ours). Starring Helen McCrory, the play discusses the destructive power of love, and survival in the face of heartbreak.

For a musical spectacular:

Disney’s Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre – opens 15 June

Judging from the latest production photos, Disney’s adaptation of the classic film is set to be an all-singing, all-dancing cave of wonders, complete with flying carpet. Take your friends and embrace the nostalgia.

For biting comedy:

The Truth at the Wyndham’s Theatre – opens 22 June

From Olivier Award-winning author Florian Zeller comes a new comedy about the unforeseen circumstances of an extra-marital liaison. Fresh from its critically acclaimed run at the Menier Chocolate Factory, The Truth is set to be a bittersweet affair.

For good, old fashioned fun:

Bugsy Malone at the Lyric Hammersmith – opens 25 June

If you prefer your pies in the face, rather than pitch-side, this is definitely one to see. Returning to the Lyric Hammersmith following its sell-out run last year, Bugsy Malone is a razzmatazz celebration of the roaring twenties, with extra splurge guns.

For a unique, experimental experience:

Unreachable at the Royal Court – opens 2 July

Anthony Nielson writes and directs a play created entirely in the rehearsal room. All we know is that it tells the story of a film director, on an obsessive quest to find the perfect light, and that it features former Doctor Who, Matt Smith. All the rest is yet to be revealed.

Don’t forget:

West End LIVE takes place on 18-19 June in Trafalgar Square, promising two days of star-studded performances from some of the capital’s top musicals. Pack a cagoule and get ready to sing your heart out.
