St James reprises Tell Me On A Sunday

Musical theatre star Marti Webb will return to the London stage next year to revive her classic performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved one-woman show Tell Me On A Sunday.

Charting the course of an English girl’s life in New York, Webb stars in the show which plays from 7 to 12 January at the St James theatre for eight performances only.

Originating the role in the West End in 1982 when she lent her voice to the first ever album of the show, Webb received huge critical acclaim for her performance as the woman at the centre of the romantic story. In 2003 the actress returned to iconic role for a UK tour.

Talking about revisiting the production ten years on, the actress whose many other credits include starring roles in Oliver!, Godspell, Evita and Cats described herself as “thrilled and delighted”, adding: “It means so much to me, it really does. It was one of the most important things to have happened to me in my life.”

Charting the protagonist’s journey through success, companionship and love, her anxieties, frustrations and heartaches, Tell Me On A Sunday features lyrics by Lloyd Webber’s regular collaborator Don Black. Together they created a score now famous for its hits including Take That Look Off Your Face, It’s Not The End Of The World (If I Lose Him) and the title track, Tell Me On A Sunday.

While the classic musical plays its limited run at the St James theatre, Lloyd Webber and Black’s latest work together, Stephen Ward, will be enjoying its premiere month in the West End. The production, which takes inspiration from one of the 20th century’s most scandalous political events, the Profumo affair, begins previews next week at the Aldwych theatre.
