Fierce combat, harsh politics, horrifying warfare… and surprisingly sweet-tasting fake blood! James Corrigan, star of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Coriolanus, took command of our Instagram story last night (Tuesday 7 November), leading us backstage at the Barbican during the show’s second preview.
And while theatrical matters on stage were a little more turbulent – the play sees a fearless soldier grapple with his standing as a leader in newfound Rome – the company were in fine fettle backstage, enjoying dance warm-ups, fight rehearsals… and post-combat misting. Check out the video below.

Coriolanus is the visceral production which opens the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Rome season in London. Following his sell-out hits of Oppenheimer (2014) and Don Quixote (2016) in Stratford-upon-Avon, Angus Jackson directs rising talent Sope Dirisu in the title role, set in a new city state struggling to find its feet.
