Government launches scam website campaign

First Published 11 September 2009, Last Updated 11 September 2009

The Office of Fair Trading has launched a new campaign to increase awareness of scam ticket websites and provide advice on how to spot them.

Just Tick It offers ticket buyers a simple checklist to ensure that the online ticket seller they are purchasing from is legitimate.

Among the suggested checks to make before purchasing tickets online are who the website is registered to, what other users say about the site and whether the site can be contacted through a full address and landline telephone number.

The campaign has been triggered by complaints from online consumers who have thought they have bought tickets for live events – theatre, music and sport alike – but whose tickets have never been delivered and whose communication has been left without response.

Speaking about Just Tick It, Paul James, Commercial Manager of The Society of London Theatre, commented: “We welcome this initiative. It is a reminder to theatregoers that there are some simple dos and don’ts when buying tickets online that can help you avoid being ripped-off.”

More information about the campaign and how to avoid website ticket scams can be found on both the OFT and Consumer Direct websites.
